WordPress Website Migration

Moving a site involves more than copying files. The database, email records and connected services need attention too. I review the setup, prepare the destination and agree the transition and checks with you.

Plan your migration

Define the kind of move

A hosting change under the same domain mainly involves the server and DNS setup. A domain change also affects content links, redirects and external services. I review email records and subdomains that share the domain.

We check the destination's PHP, database, storage and feature requirements before moving. Missing access or provider actions are recorded in the plan.

Transfer files and database together

A working copy requires both. We prepare a backup, configure the new environment and, where possible, test it before changing DNS.

  • File and database transfer
  • Connection and HTTPS configuration
  • Image, navigation and page checks
  • Required links and redirects for a domain change
  • DNS transition and agreed functional checks

Plan for new orders and content

An active store can receive different records on the old and new copies. We agree the final transfer time and any brief pause needed, then check where new orders, forms and accounts are recorded.

DNS changes reach users at different times. The old hosting closure needs planning around that transition. I aim to reduce disruption through preparation rather than promise zero downtime in every environment.

Verify the destination and hand over

I check important pages, dashboard access, forms and any store functions included in the scope. A domain change also requires checking redirect targets and updated service settings.

Handover notes cover completed changes and actions needed before closing the old environment. Migration does not itself guarantee unchanged rankings or include a redesign; additional work is agreed separately.

Common questions

Are mailboxes included in the migration?

Email migration is a separate task. We review the mail provider, accounts and records and explicitly include it if required. Existing mail records can also be preserved during the website move.

What happens to links when the domain changes?

Important old URLs should point to suitable new destinations. Continued access to the old domain and redirects matters. Search engines may take time to process the change.

Can an active store be moved?

Yes, with a plan for the final data transfer. We agree timing and checks around new orders so the transition does not overlook records arriving during the move.

Should I cancel the old hosting immediately?

Wait until the transition and required checks are complete. DNS, recent records and backups should be reviewed before deciding when to close the old environment.
